Balmatta Institute Of Printing Technology (BIPT)
BIPT has the heritage of old Basel Mission Press which was established in 1841 by the German Missionaries from Basel. The Basel Mission has the honor of starting the first Printing Press in the district It gained popularity and fame through out the South India in the next few years. In the year 1851-1852 German Missionary Mr. Peblest by bringing print types from Germany and made the progress of the press. It started printing in other regional languages of south beside Kannada and printed some of the books in other European languages as well. They used to bring print types from Germany and print the books and hand bills here in Mangalore till 1901.
In 1901 they opened a unit to make print types within the press premises. In 1904 another unit to design drawing and art map etc., was established. Besides Kannada Tulu , Malayalam, Konkani, Sanskrit hand bills and books are printed here. Since it had its own publishing division, it had printed and published hundreds of books through them. Knowing about the facilities of the press and the quality of the printing then Govt. of Mumbai and Madras used to give the printing order of Text Books of schools under their jurisdiction In 1875 Basel Mission invented a special small printing types and gave a gift to printing technology. It is said very popular and famous Kittel Dictionary could remain for a long period because of this invention of printing.
First Kannada Daily News Paper “ Mangaluru Samaachara” has been published by this Basel Mission Press. Then many other News Papers, books , and Dictionaries had been published by this press.
In 1904 the Missionaries imported three new Machinery from Germany and started printing in colour. In 1905 the press owned seven Printing Machines and it was operated by oil engines.
The Basel Mission Press started imparting training in Printing Technology and book Binding for youngsters of the society and helped many of them to start their own printing units in and around Mangalore..
At present the press is run by The KACES, an educational and charitable society for the benefit of the society. It is trying its best to keep up the heritage of Basel Mission Press. It is imparting training in Book Binding under Central Govt. apprenticeship course in Book Binding for two years. The institution is headed by the Manager and supported by technical and computer/DTP staff.
The Balmatta Institute Of Printing Technology under takes all kinds of printing jobs like Books, Journals, Magazines, Receipt Books, Forms, Ledgers & Registers, Handbills, Greeting cards, Invitations, Certificates etc.,
The institution is famous for its unique book binding skills. Thesis binding with Gold embossing is a unique feature which is been utilized by most of the premier institutions from in and around Mangalore..
