Academic Programmes

Regular Programme:

Karnataka Theological College is affiliated with the Senate of Serampore College (University).  It offers the following regular courses: Bachelor of Divinity Degree Course for 5years: The BD degree programme is the basic theological programme of the Senate of Serampore College (University). The BD programme is meant to prepare theological graduates who are competent and articulate in theological discourses, as well as mature in Christian spirituality when it comes to its core expressions like discipleship, transformed life-style, prayer, preaching, sharing the hope we have in Christ, pastoral care and counselling.  It is intended to instill and cultivate good moral values and life-style in the lives of the students.  Character building is also an essential part of theological education.  The degree programme attempts to inculcate a sense of commitment and integrity in the students.  The BD degree programme is a ministerial training programme for social transformation.

Objectives The Objectives of the BD Degree programme are to:

  • Develop values of the “reign of God” and enhance the ‘New Creation’ witness (with special reference to Justice, Peace and Integrity of all Creation) in society.
  • Create critical consciousness and openness, to analyze cultural, social, economic, political and ecclesiastical values.
  • Provide tools for interpreting the Word of God in different contexts in society.
  • Enable persons to become effective witnesses in the context of their varied and diversified vocations.
  • Provide theological education as a transforming influence in personal, ecclesial and societal life.
  • Provide enough opportunity for the development of personal and community centered devotional and spiritual formation.

Admission Requirements for the BD degree

  • A candidate at the time of admission to the B.D. degree course must satisfy one of the following conditions.  S/he should be
    • A holder of the Bachelor Degree from a recognized Indian University, or its recognized equivalent degree.  (S/he would be admitted into the second year of the degree programme).
    • A holder of the B.Th. degree of the Senate of Serampore College having passed the two qualifying English papers      
      • Category I:  B.Th. degree holders in the first or second class would be     admitted to the fourth year of the degree  programme.
      • Category II: B.Th. degree holders in the third class would be admitted into the third year of the degree programme
    • A candidate who has passed PU/10 plus two examination and is qualified to be admitted to a degree course of an Indian university, shall be admitted to the  first year of the degree programme.
  • Entrance Test : The College will conduct an Entrance Test, for the admission of candidates, in the areas of Kannada Language, English Language, Scripture Knowledge and General Knowledge as well as an interview before granting admission. 
  •  Age: A candidate at the time of admission should have completed 18 years of age, having passed the Entrance Test conducted by the College

Course Details:

  • The programme shall consist of a total of 52 (22 Half or 2 credits and 30 full or 4 credits) courses including thesis or project work.
  • Those who write thesis shall be exempted from 8/4 credit courses. Those who will opt for classical language shall be exempted from one four-credit course.
  • A candidate with B.Th. degree of the Senate of Serampore College (University) in First/Second Class will be required to pass all the papers/courses prescribed for the fourth and fifth years of B.D. studies.
  • A candidate with B.Th. degree of the Senate of Serampore College (University) in Third Class will be required to pass all the papers/courses prescribed for the third, fourth and fifth years of B.D. studies.

Field Education:



4 credits

Thesis             Writing of a thesis is expected of all candidates of the B.D. Course.  Exemptions from writing the thesis may be granted by the College faculty.  In such cases candidates shall be required to pass two full course papers in lieu of thesis.

Field Education Field Education (practical work) shall be an integral part of ministerial training in which faculty and students will be actively involved.  Two kinds of field education are envisaged: concurrent and intensive.  As far as the concurrent field education is concerned, besides the regular weekly practical ministry programme, candidates may be required to have meaningful practical exposure and reflection in relation to some of the subjects they study during the academic year.

Field education shall be given credit, not merely in terms of number of hours, but in terms of the different kinds of practical work done: rural, urban, church-related, inter-faith, social action/reform movements, etc.  As far as intensive field education is concerned, it is of the length of 20 days for each year.  Such intensive practical work is conducted between the semester break, or during the winter (Christmas) vacation, or during the summer vacation (after the annual examination).

Out of the 20 days set aside for intensive field work, about 25% to 33% of the days would be given to orientation (introductory theoretical inputs etc.), and concluding reflection segments.

As far evaluation of the entire field education work for the year is concerned, 25% of the marks is set aside for concurrent practical work and 75% for intensive practical work.  Out of the 75% for the intensive practical work, 25% is given for the reflective report written by the student and 50% for the actual practical work done.

The kind of intensive field education is as follows:

First Year                    To be decided by the College.                        The course is non-credit.

Fifth Year                   Being engaged in Pastoral Ministry.

From the second year onwards field education will be credited.  It is suggested that the Dean of field education and faculty member-in-charge of each team spend a reasonable time with the students in their field placements.

The manner of reporting on the intensive field education programme (be it an inter-disciplinary colloquium, or group reporting, or individual reflective and critical reports etc.) is left to the discretion of the Faculty.

Academic and Living Expenses The academic and living expenses for single and married students are as follows: Single students            :           Rs.40,800 per annum Married students         :           Rs.54,600 per annum Candidates sponsored with job guarantee by the member Churches will get full scholarship.  Others may be considered for partial scholarships of 60% or 75% depending on their financial status and academic performance.

A separate request should be sent to the Principal in case of applying for a College scholarship.

Theological Studies by Extension

The College has designed a new theological training programme for lay people in Karnataka and started in 1987 a separate department called Theological Studies by Extension.  The main purpose of this department is the renewal and training of the whole Church for the ministry in various forms.

Through the Department of Theological Studies by Extension the College offers the following courses:

                 The medium of instruction is Kannada.

Certificate in Theology Course (C.Th.)

The College offers the C.Th. Course by correspondence and seminars through this Department.

Duration :     2 years

Eligibility: S.S.L.C. pass or mature candidates aged 25 years and above.

Mature candidates (non-S.S.L.C. and aged 25 years and above) should appear for an Entrance Examination of 3 hours each in Bible Knowledge and General Knowledge.

The course consists of 10 papers.  Students are provided with self-study material from time to time.

Diploma in Christian Studies (Dip.C.S.)

Duration:         2 years.  However, the Diploma should be completed within a maximum period of four years from the date of Registration.

Eligibility:       Pass in 10+2 or P.U.C. with eligibility to enter University.

Curriculum: The Diploma in Christian Studies shall consist of 10 courses in all – 6 required and 4 optional.

This course will provide an opportunity in the Indian context for the study of a) Christianity, its history, faith and practice b) The life, teaching and work of Jesus Christ c)The Bible, its formation, interpretation, its significance for Christian faith. d) The interaction of Christianity with people of other faiths and cultures.

Bachelor of Christian Studies Degree Course (B.C.S.)

The B.C.S. degree course is designed to provide persons with an informed understanding of Christian faith and to strengthen their academic skills to interact with their professional or vocational commitment in service and witness to the world.  The courses are intended to integrate theological education with the professional orientation of the candidate and enable persons to become effective witnesses in the context of their varied and diversified ministries.

Duration :  4 years.  Should be completed within seven years from the date of   registration.


Bachelor degree of a recognized Indian University.                          

Candidates are expected to pass the Entrance Examination   in English, Bible Knowledge and General Knowledge.


A holder of B.Th. degree in II class and has already passed  the qualifying English papers.

Curriculum: The Bachelor of Christian Studies consists of a total number of 20 courses with 13 core subjects and 7 optionals and a thesis or two papers in lieu of thesis preferably in the area of professional specialization.
